Christmas turnaround times

Chemtest are operating a normal service up until 23rd December 2011 and will re-open on 4th January 2012. If your results are required before the Christmas break you will need to submit samples and schedules by the following dates:

7-wdta 15th December 2011

5-wdta 19th December 2011

3-wdta 21st December 2011

MCERTS PCB Congeners & ISO17025 for TSS

The scope of our UKAS/MCERTS accreditations has been extended yet again.

We are now pleased to offer determinations of individual PCB congeners in soils (ICES7 / EC7) as MCERTS accredited determinands. Testing for other PCB congeners, e.g. the WHO12, is available too and we continue to offer MCERTS accredited PCBs as Aroclors by GC-ECD.

We can also now confirm that ISO17025 accreditation for Total Suspended Solids in water has been achieved, as predicted in our autumn accreditation update.

Technical Update November 2011

ASBESTOS TESTING

In line with current legislation and developing industry expectations, Chemtest have combined their screening method for Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) and their method for Asbestos Fibres in Soils into one procedure, accredited to ISO 17025 by UKAS:

ASBESTOS SCREEN

SOP 2190: Identification of Asbestos Containing Materials and Fibres in Soils

To assist us in scheduling samples for this analysis, please could you supply an additional sample of between 200g and 1kg.

AS MORE EXTENSIVE TESTING IS REQUIRED FOR THE NEW METHOD, THIS WILL INCUR ADDITIONAL COST. PLEASE CONTACT: Bid.team@chemtest.co.uk FOR CONFIRMATION OF YOUR RATES.

Please note that the asbestos screen for pieces of ACM, SOP 2186, is no longer available as a stand-alone test.

Chemtest offer a number of options for asbestos analysis in soils, compliant with current legislation. To view details of these methods click on the link to our website.

Qualitative analysis for asbestos is undertaken by polarized light microscopy (PLM) as described by the HSE in HSG 248.

TPHCWG, Hexavalent Chromium and Suspended Solids

We are delighted to announce that Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons testing with aliphatic/aromatic split and carbon banding (widely known as TPHCWG) on soils, is now UKAS accredited to the MCERTS standard. The carbon banding employed is according to the latest EA guidance.

On water samples, Hexavalent Chromium (Chromium VI) is now UKAS accredited to the ISO17025 standard and accreditation for Suspended Solids is expected shortly.

Principal Environmental Geochemist - Dr Jamie Cutting

We are pleased to welcome Dr Jamie Cutting to the Chemtest team. Jamie brings with him a wealth of experience in the application of environmental geochemistry to contaminated land risk assessment and remediation. Jamie graduated from Leicester University with a BSc (Hons) in biochemistry, before undertaking an MSc at the University of Manchester in Pollution and Environmental Control. He then went on to complete a PhD in Environmental Geochemistry at the University of Bristol were he also managed the Aqueous Environmental Geochemistry Research Facility before entering the contaminated land sector in 2005.

Jamie's appointment reinforces Chemtest's expertise in chemical analysis, bespoke laboratory testing for remedial design, the application of on site analytics and advanced data management.

Jamie will also be delivering a series of technical seminars and presentations to help contaminated land professionals realise the technical merits of applying geochemical techniques in the contaminated land sector.

TPHCWG, Mercury and CV's

In line with Chemtest's commitment to continuous improvement in method development, capability and accreditation we are pleased to announce further investment in capital equipment and accreditation.

Low Level Mercury
Chemtest are now able to offer low level Mercury to 0.01ug/l and 0.1mg/kg for water and soil after the purchase and validation of a dedicated mercury analyser.

Speciated Mercury
In addition to the low level Mercury we have also purchased a HPLC which works with the dedicated mercury analyser. Chemtest are now able to offer Total, Methyl, Ethyl, Elemental and Inorganic Mercury.

TPHCWG method and accreditation
A new Gilson automated SPE prep station has been purchased and a method has been developed that meets UKAS requirements to perform TPHCWG (C8-C40) for aromatic and aliphatic fractions. Upon final completion of the validation exercise this method will be both UKAS and McertS accredited.

Calorific Value
A bomb calorimeter by Parr has now been purchased and validated to enable Chemtest to bring Calorific values in house.

All of the above investments will enable Chemtest to continue to deliver our market leading services and to bring in some of the sub-contracted analysis to improve our overall performance.

Continued Investment in Analytical Equipment

In quarter 3 of 2010 Chemtest invested in over £137,000 worth of analytical equipment; this increased capital expenditure is in line with Chemtest's ambition to maintain it's position as the UK's premier contaminated land laboratory. Revenue has grown by 20% this year and the mix of testing has changed, this new equipment will help us maintain our impressive turnaround times and improve method development in new analytical methodologies.

A day at the races

A day at the RacesClients from across the UK joined Chemtest for a full day and night out at Newmarket Racecourse. We started the day with a tour of our facilities followed by lunch at the racecourse, then the racing commenced with the Chemtest Maiden Fillies Stakes. 'Al Sharood' ridden by Frankie Dettori came in by a head in the Chemtest sponsored race. Several clients watched this race from the Royal Box.

Asbestos in Soils - UKAS Accreditation

We are pleased to announce that asbestos fibre screening, identification and quantification of asbestos content in soils are now ISO17025 accredited as in-house procedures, offering enhanced responsiveness to our clients’ asbestos testing needs.

The above methods are suitable for Hazardous/Special Wastes classifications and join our existing ISO17025 accredited identification method for asbestos in bulk materials (to HSG248) on our UKAS schedule.

Our Chemtest onsite Division is also accredited for the surveying and sampling of asbestos in buildings, to ISO17020, allowing us to offer a comprehensively accredited asbestos sampling and analysis service.
