09.01.2008 Chemtest success at NBA Business Awards 2007
Chemtest entered the NBA Business Awards for the first time this year.
The aim of the Newmarket Business Association (NBA) is to both highlight and celebrate the wealth and diversity of business expertise in Newmarket and to reward the high standards attained. The Business Awards started in 2003 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the NBA. As the event was a runaway success, it was decided to make it an annual affair.
In this first year of entry Chemtest came away on the night with 2 awards:
- Large Business of the Year 2007
- Highly Commended on the Judges award
This is in recognition of the growth the business has achieved not only in turnover but in every aspect of the analytical process including Quality Assurance, Customer Service and Method Development.
"I am very proud of the team at Chemtest who have all worked extremely well under challenging circumstances to provide a positive customer experience. It is excellent to receive recognition as a business and to set the benchmark for next years performance. Well done to you all” says Peter Noone, Managing Director.

28.11.2007 New Market Leading Instrumentation Testing
Chemtest have taken a lead in their market as the only European laboratory to trial the new Clarus® 600 Gas Chromatograph, designed by Perkin Elmer. Chemtest have a long established partnership with Perkin Elmer and were invited to participate in the beta testing of this radically new instrument two years ago.
The instrument benefits from the fastest available heat-up and cool-down chromatograph oven together with enhanced auto-sampler capabilities. The result is accelerated analytical cycle times without the compromise in quality of data associated with other recognised ‘fast’ techniques.
Chemtest initially chose to evaluate the beta version of the new chromatograph with TPH analysis. The beta instrument performed consistently and reliably throughout the trial period. Chemtest has subsequently purchased five production models of the Clarus® 600, extending the range of organics tests to include accelerated analysis of PAHs and VOCs by GC-MS.
The Clarus® 600 represents a significant advance for Chemtest through increased sample throughput meaning increased flexibility to deliver better quality results on time.

05.07.2007 Chemtest in Ireland
Chemtest have established an on-site laboratory in East Wicklow which is helping to achieve faster processing times in an important environmental project.
The on-site testing facility is located at a sand and gravel pit operated by Roadstone Dublin Ltd at Blessington, sections of which had been used as illegal unauthorised landfills for mainly domestic, commercial and industrial wastes and construction and demolition waste.
Roadstone are currently remediating the land filled areas. This requires the excavation of the backfilled material and the processing of that material, by screening, to remove the waste. The screened material is sampled and tested against Irish Waste Acceptance Criteria (IWAC) to determine appropriate disposal routes.
Offsite testing was employed for the initial phase of the work. However the standard turnaround time of 10 days became critical to the project duration and led to delays in the processing of the material. Mouchel Parkman proposed the establishment of an on-site laboratory solely for the provision of IWAC to Roadstone at Blessington. The proposals were agreed with the Irish Environment Protection Agency and the laboratory was established at the end of March.
Techniques employed on site involve the analysis of the soils by rapid assay techniques after full demonstration method applicability and by GC-FID. Preparation of single stage leachate in compliance with BS-EN 12457-2 and analysis of the leachate for metals by voltammetry and Ion Chromatography and anions, TOC, phenol by colorimetric test kits.
The methods are validated on-site, all tests are run with additional quality control samples and duplicates are sent back to Chemtest for replicate analysis at our UKAS accredited laboratory.
A turnaround time of four days is consistently being achieved which has led to a significant improvement in the overall efficiency of the project.

Well done to Alec Jones in 1st, Craig Sillars in 2nd and Mark Gill taking 3rd place.
The Longest Drive went to Laurence Bonner, Nearest Pin to Ian Hunter and the Longest Walked to Phil Weston who came in on the same points as Peter Noone, but staff are not allowed to win!
Thank you to Perkin Elmer who sponsored the Polo Shirts.

24.05.2007 Customer Survey
Chemtest are always striving to improve the quality of their service and gaining client feedback provides us with a valuable measurement of this. Chemtest undertake a regular review from its customers usually through a faxback form.
The 2007 survey has evolved and was conducted electronically via an email directing clients to a link on the Chemtest website. This whole process is paperless and aside from the obvious environmental benefits this brings, it means that it is easier for clients to complete taking on average 90 seconds. The response rate using this method has also significantly increased
The information gathered will be collated to reflect our customer’s perception of our business and to drive an action plan for continuous improvement.
Thank you to all customers who have taken the time to provide us with their views. A summary of the results will be published here in due course.

17.05.2007 100% Chemtest
Chemtest is aware that an important factor in providing an exceptional service to clients is analytical turnaround times. The capability to provide fast turnarounds is a key factor in securing new business, but the most important factor is the ability to meet the agreed completion dates with our clients.
Chemtest inline with our business improvement plan, have set targets to achieve a turnaround time of greater than 85% out on time every month. With the introduction of a new reporting system, ‘live’ information regarding due analysis can be accessed. This has enabled bottlenecks and resource issues within the laboratory to be identified and resolved. Along with the new reporting system we have developed many new system processes and this combined effort allows every Team Leader to prioritise the right samples at the right time. This has enabled Chemtest to achieve turnaround times of greater than 95% out on time for the past 6 months, and 100% out on time achieved for 3 of the six months.
Chemtest is positive that this has benefited all of our clients and has enabled them to focus on their own priorities and we look forward to continuing to provide them with the high quality analytical service they expect.

10.11.2006 Taking the High Road
Chemtest exhibited at the 2nd Annual Scottish land Remediation Conference on the 27th September at the Glasgow Science Centre. 29.07.2006 Chemtest Golf Day 2006
Chemtest's annual golf day took place this year on 19th July with eighteen key clients enjoying an exclusive day of golfing at the world famous Brabazon Course.
The Brabazon Golf Course at the Belfry has been host to the Ryder Cup four times and clients were understandably excited by this rare opportunity to play at such a prestigious venue. People rose to the challenge of the course, with many competitive score cards handed in. Efforts were recognised with awards presented for 1st, 2nd and
3rd placed, nearest the pin, longest drive and also longest walked. Coming in with 16 points, Peter Noone, Managing Director of Chemtest, was disappointed with his personal performance on the day. Clients were, however, understanding and generously provided Peter with the excuse that, "it's difficult to play good golf as well as attending to all your guests!"
After a day of golf, dinner was served in the Ryder Room with clients retiring to their rooms at the Belfry following several enjoyable hours in the bar! The day was an outright success and feedback from clients has been excellent; in the words of one guest "Carlsberg don't do golf days….. but if they did they wouldn't be able to beat this !!" Peter Noone hopes to make next year's golf day even better but admits he has his work cut out.
